Russian-Indonesian seminar of the Valdai Discussion Club, the National Archives of Indonesia and the Federal Archival Agency of the Russian Federation
On September 24, the Valdai Discussion Club, together with the National Archives of Indonesia and the Federal Archival Agency of the Russian Federation, will hold a Russian-Indonesian seminar titled “Indonesia – Russia: From the Past to the Future, History and Prospects”. The event will be held in Jakarta (Indonesia).
The Valdai Club has been developing partnerships with the countries of Southeast Asia for many years. In 2015, an Asian Regional Conference of the Club was held in Jakarta. This year, the Valdai Club returns to Indonesia for a substantive analysis of both bilateral relations and the positions of Russia and Indonesia on key issues of regional security and development. A distinctive feature of this year’s discussions is an attempt to look at the prospects for relations between the two countries through their shared history. That is why the seminar will be held with the participation of leaders and researchers from the national archives of the two countries.
Indonesia is the largest ASEAN country and one of Russia’s key partners in Southeast Asia. The growing level of Russian-Indonesian relations was confirmed by the official visit to Moscow on July 31 of the elected President and current Minister of Defence of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto, who noted that he had visited the Russian capital four times over the past four years.
Not only representatives of Indonesia, but also guests from India and China will be invited to speak at the Russian-Indonesian Seminar. Their participation will allow the Russian-Indonesian dialogue to be integrated into the broader context of regional cooperation.
The agenda of the Russian-Indonesian Seminar is designed for one day and is completely open to the media. In addition, a press scrum will be organized after each session.
The seminar will be opened on September 24 at 9:00 Jakarta Time (GMT+7) by Andrey Artizov, Head of the Federal Archival Agency of the Russian Federation, Imam Gunarto, Head of the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia, Sergey Tolchenov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Indonesia and Andrey Bystritskiy, Chairman of the Board of the Foundation for Development and Support of the Valdai Discussion Club.
During the seminar, experts will discuss the following topics:
* Historical prospects for bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia;
* Geopolitical prospects for bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia;
* Digital transformation in an era of global turbulence;
* Relations between Indonesia and Russia in the naval sphere.
The seminar in Jakarta fits seamlessly into the strategy for strengthening bilateral ties laid down by recent high-level negotiations. Expert recommendations following the seminar will undoubtedly be used in developing further political and economic decisions in this area. For the Russian-Indonesian seminar, Alexey Kupriyanov, Head of the Indian Ocean Region Centre at the IMEMO Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, prepared a Valdai paper titled “Maritime Geopolitics of the Pacific and Indian Oceans: A View from Moscow” on the national interests of Indonesia and Russia in the Asia-Pacific. The presentation of the analytical paper and the seminar agenda will take place at the Valdai Club’s Moscow headquarters on September 16.
The Russian-Indonesian seminar will also be attended by: Rike Dia Pitaloka, Member of Parliament of the Republic of Indonesia and Special Representative for the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia; Shofwan Al Banna Choiruzzad, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Indonesia; Hikmahanto Juwana, Rector of Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani; Nezar Patria, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information of the Republic of Indonesia; Hinsa Siburian, Head of the National Cybersecurity and Cryptography Agency; Ashwin Sasongko Sastrosubroto, Senior Researcher, Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Member of the National Council for Information and Communication Technology; Mego Pinandito, Deputy Head of Development Policy, National Agency for Research and Innovation; Laksamana Muhammad Ali, Chief of General Staff of the Navy of the Republic of Indonesia; Connie Rahakudini Bakri, Professor, Faculty of International Relations, St Petersburg University, Director of the Maritime Department, National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia; Arvind Gupta, Head and Co-Founder, Digital India Foundation (India); Nelson Wong, Vice President of the Shanghai Center for Strategic and International Studies (China); Admiral (Rtd.)
